Benton County now accepting applications for Abatement of Property Taxes for Flood-impacted Properties
On December 8, 2009 the Benton County Board of Supervisors approved abating property taxes for residential, commercial and other real property for the period of time the property owners were not able to use or occupy their property because of damage from the 2008 flood. The abatement covers the taxing periods of July 1 – December 31, 2008 and January 1 – June 30, 2009 and applies to the property taxes due September 30, 2009 and March 31, 2010.
Flood-impacted property owners must submit a tax abatement application form to the Benton Co Treasurer no later than February 1, 2010. There are separate forms for residential and commercial property owners. The forms are available on the Benton County website at www.cobentonia.com, the Treasurer’s website at www.iowatreasurers.org and at the Benton County Treasurer’s office, 111 E 4th St, Vinton, IA 52349. The Treasurer’s phone number is 319-472-2450 or 319-472-2439.
Exceptions to Abatements
Per Iowa Code 445.62, if property taxes were more than 30 days delinquent at the time of the flood, the property owner is not eligible for an abatement. The applicant must have been the legal titleholder on June 8, 2008 and continue to hold legal title to the destroyed real property.
